One style detail can add life to an outfit.
Picture two men in the exact same suit.
They're standing right next to each other.
One man has this “detail”. The other doesn't.
One of them will have a “style” edge.
What is it?
A dimple in the tie knot.
This tiny sartorial detail under your tie knot is equated to strong evidence of a sophisticated style.
The dimple is a fold in the tie’s fabric near the knot.
It adds more depth to the tie and the outfit as a whole.
Men who really know how to dress opt for a dimple in their tie because:
- It turns the tie from a simple piece of material around your neck into a power statement.
- It adds an extra dimension to the tie.
- It adds elegance and character to your tie knot.
- A dimple that is in proportion to the knot makes the tie curve a little better out and down.
Without the dimple, some silk ties just flop right down like a ladies scarf.
Knowing how to make a dimple will garner favorable comments from those you encounter on a surprisingly frequent basis. Dimpling their tie knot may look easy, but creating the perfect dimple takes a little bit of practice.
Below I give you two tips that will guarantee a perfectly dimpled necktie.
Tie Dimple Step #1:
- Start with a four-in-hand knot, making sure the tie is not twisted in any way.
- When you’re ready to pull the knot tight, grab both edges of the tie just above the knot.
- Squeeze the edges of this portion of the tie with your thumb and index finger.
- Keeping the fabric pressed between your fingers, use your other hand and pull on the front end of the tie. The harder you pull, the more pronounced of a dimple you will create.
- Adjust it until the dimple is just right, secure your tie against your collar and you’re ready to go.
Tie Dimple Step #2:
- Follow the exact same steps as above until you are ready to pull the knot tight.
- Grabbing both edges of the tie just below the knot, place your index finger in the middle of the edges.
- Create a similar groove in the tie fabric while keeping the edges in place and pull the front end of the tie down.
- Button the shirt collar and fasten the knot up to the collar.
Pinch the Tie – Another simple alternative to make the dimple involves simply pinching the tie near the knot to make it look like a “W” right before tightening it. Create the dimple with your hands first and then secure it by pulling the knot tight. Give the knots a final pinch once the tie is tightened and the dimple will stay in place throughout the day.
Common Tie Dimple Mistakes To Avoid:
Sometimes, you can end up with a dimple that is foppish and overwrought.
- Using a narrow tie – The narrower a tie, the harder it is to create a dimple. It's a real challenge to get a dimple with a tie that's only 6cm wide. Skinny ties don't do it well at all. Some cheap ties will dimple well but many won't.
- Using the wrong material- Very light cotton ties may be too soft to hold a dimple because they simply crease or fold, and lightweight knitted ties will produce different dimples than thick cashmere or silk ties. The best and easiest to dimple are ties made from a coarser fabric. such as fine ribbed textured silk.
- Using a chunky knot – The chunkyWindsor knot is almost always the wrong knot for the perfect dimple. Choose the right knot to begin with. Some knots are better for the dimple then others. Two great knots for the dimple is the Four in Hand as well as the Half Windsor knot.
- Creating a symmetrical dimple – Your dimple should look like you spent a few seconds fixing it in place. Don't try too hard. Avoid striving for perfect symmetry.
- The wrong design on the tie – The most elegant knot will be wasted on an ugly tie. Invest in a great tie, and then perfect the knot.
- Tools to create dimples – Use your finger to create a dimple. Do not use a dimple maker. You don't want to explain to any person that you used a contraption to form the dimple in your tie.

The philosophy of the tie dimple is that it should be a personal expression of artful imperfection. A tie dimple should be created with an air of indifference, even when the decision to create one is intentional.
Remember to call them dimples, not wrinkles.
