My Review: Does Blu Atlas’ Atlantis Smell Good?
Let me great straight to the point – Blu Atlas Atlantis smells great. Now, I know what you're thinking:
“Antonio – Blu Atlas have paid you to write this review. You're hardly gonna take their money and pan their product!”
Don't get me wrong – I see what you're saying. But here's the truth – sponsorship or not, it's my job to give you guys the truth you deserve. If I steer you wrong, then that devalues my advice, which just isn't worth the risk for me.
The opinion I express here are my own – so you can be sure I'm not selling out for the sake of a few bucks.
Blu Atlas Atlantis – First Impressions
It's a smooth but citrusy fragrance that's perfect for guys who want a brighter, more playful scent for everyday use. It's not too heavy, not too light – ideal for the office or for weekend wear.
I know – smooth and citrusy sound like they shouldn't go together. After all, a citrus accord is often tart by nature and distinctively sour. This is true for the most part, but Blu Atlas' breaks the mold slightly and uses a certain top note to help smooth out the citrusy punch and create a unique silkiness to their fragrance.
Atlantis' Sillage: Is It Strong?
As I'm sure you guys know by now, sillage is the measure of the trail a fragrance leaves when left on the skin. Think of it like the wake left by a boat on the water. The larger the boat, the wider and longer the wake. The same goes for the sillage of a cologne. The better the sillage, the more noticeable the fragrance will be to those around you once you've walked by them.
Typically, heavier scents, like Oriental and Woody fragrances, tend to have stronger sillage than lighter scents, like Floral and Citrus fragrances.
Blu Atlas' Atlantis falls in line with this. As a predominantly citrus fragrance, its sillage is moderate to mild. However, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Atlantis isn't an arrogant fragrance that invades the noses of unsuspecting passers-by.
Atlantis has class, it's sophisticated and elegant. Sure, if you happen to pass someone on a stairwell or narrow pathway, they might get a pleasant hint of your fragrance once you've passed. But for the most part, this fragrance is for the man who wants to smell great in a gentlemanly manner.
Does Blu Atlas Atlantis Have Good Projection?
Projection is different to sillage – although they're often confused with one another. While sillage refers to the wake your fragrance leaves behind you, projection is more about the reach of your fragrance around you. In short, it's how far your scent can travel in every direction.
Projection is important because it allows your fragrance to be enjoyed by those around you, not just yourself. Think of it like your own fragrance bubble – the better the projection, the further your fragrance bubble extends around you and the longer it will last.
Once again, as a result of Blu Atlas Atlantis' citrus lead, the projection of this fragrance is relatively short-lived. When first applied, those around you will experience a pleasant hint of your fragrance. However, after around 90 minutes, expect Atlantis to become a skin-level fragrance that's only noticeable by those who get up close and personal with you.
Longevity – How Long Does Blu Atlas Atlantis Last?
Longevity is simple – how long does a fragrance last on the skin before it disappears completely?
When it comes to Atlantis, longevity is actually pretty good. From the first spray, you can expect a longevity of between 6-8 hours. I'd say that's actually slightly above average for a citrus fragrance, which typically start out strong but dry down quickly and disappear completely within around 5 hours.
In my opinion, that's all thanks to Blu Atlas' use of deeper accords towards the heart of the fragrance's life cycle. It's almost as though they've used citrus at the top to give the fragrance a fresh kick in the opening, and then a mixture of floral and fruity notes at the heart to help extend the scent's longevity.
Blu Atlas Atlantis – Notes Breakdown
Fragrances have three timed sections that come in a life cycle of points – kind of like an evaporating pyramid of different scents.
Each of the three sections contains individual scents or ‘notes,' that are belted together into the overall fragrance you end up smelling.
These are the individual building blocks of scent. There are three different kinds of notes that comprise a scent – top, heart (or medium) and base notes.
Top Notes
Top notes:
- Bergamot
- Lemon
- Blackcurrant
This is an interesting mix of fruity and citrus notes that creates a unique blend of tart and smooth scents. The bergamot and lemon are tart and juicy, while the blackcurrant adds a touch of sweetness. This makes for a refreshing and invigorating fragrance that's perfect for summer days or spring nights.
Bergamot is an interesting note. While it's technically a citrus fragrance, many perfumers use it to provide a slight smoothness to their scents. As a scent, bergamot isn't as tangy as its citrus brothers. It has a more mellow aroma that provides a perfect contrast to the tart lemon and juicy blackcurrant.
Heart Notes
Heart Notes:
- Lavender
- Clary Sage
- Peach
- Apricot
Once again, we have an interesting mix of fruity and floral notes here. Lavender is a very popular essential oil, and for good reason. It has a calming, soothing effect on the mind and body. Clary sage is another excellent choice for relaxation, as it has similar effects to lavender. Peach and apricot are both fairly sweet fruits, so they add a nice touch of sweetness to the blend.
It seems that Blu Atlas is experimenting with opposing scent profiles in this fragrance. On one hand, they're pushing sweet and invigorating fruity accords that provide a punchy, liveliness to the cologne. On the other hand, they're also including some more calming and relaxing floral notes. It's an interesting mix, and I'm seriously impressed by the unique fragrance that they've managed to create.
Base Notes
Base Notes:
- Orris
- Oakmoss
- Violet
- Ambrette Seed
- Musk
Once again, an interesting mix at the base.
You can see the usual suspects here – musk and oakmoss are pretty common at the base of many masculine designer fragrances. They help provide the green, slightly earthy foundation that a lot of these types of scents need.
But then you've got violet and ambrette seed, which are both fairly uncommon base notes in masculine fragrances. Violet provides a powdery sweetness to the mix, while ambrette seed adds a touch of spiciness.
What's really interesting is the continued hint of citrus that remains through the dry down and into the base of the fragrance. Sure, it's not as strong as in the opening, but it's definitely there and mixes seamlessly with the deeper, spicy base notes.
This creates a fragrance that's truly unique. Blu Atlas has actually managed to create a fragrance that simultaneously blends the freshness of a citrus cologne with the depth and richness of a spicy oriental cologne.
Blu Atlas Atlantis – How Have Others Reviewed It?
I'm not the only guy who has enjoy Atlantis.
Plenty of my buddies on YouTube have given their honest reviews of the fragrance too – so I thought I'd share those with you. After all, Blu Atlas's Atlantis has been making waves in the fragrance community – and here's the proof.
Top Notes’ Blu Atlas Atlantis Review
Top Notes opens his Youtube review by commenting on the presentation and construction of the Blu Atlas Atlantis bottle.
He outlines the high-quality, metal construction and marvels over the pressure-sensitive atomizer. It's clear to see he thinks they've put a lot of effort into producing a premium-quality product both inside and outside of the bottle.
The note breakdown is professional and accurate as always – he even rates the cologne as a 9.5/10. That isn't an easy rating to achieve from such a well-respected Youtube fragrance channel.
Fragrance Doud’s Blu Atlas Atlantis Review
Fragrance Doud is crazy positive about Blu Atlas Atlantis in his Youtube review.
He goes as far to say that both he and his wife think that it's the best fresh fragrance that he's bought and worn this year.
In his opinion, it matches (if not exceeds) the quality of well-known fresh fragrances by Dior, Lacoste and Coach – an incredible achievement for a relatively unknown fragrance house.
Fragrance Doud also discusses the quality of the notes, very much in line with what I mentioned earlier. He also details his experience with the atomizer and how the metal, pressure-sensitive plunger makes applying the cologne a joy.
TLTG’s Blu Atlas Atlantis Review
TLTG's Youtube review of Blu Atlas' Atlantis goes into a lot of detail about every aspect of the fragrance. He speaks very openly about how much his wife loved the fragrance – saying that she picked up notes of apricot and peach mixed with citrus accords throughout the scent's life cycle.
Interestingly, TLTG doesn't actually think this is a masculine fragrance. He even goes as far as to say that women could pull this off if worn correctly. The slight floral and powdery tones of this fragrance make it very versatile and wearable.
Price-wise, TLTG discusses the quality of the fragrance and how it definitely exceeds the $100 price point. It can keep up with some of the top designer fragrances, though he wouldn't go as far as to say it uses the oil quality of more niche offerings on the market.
