The suit is the foundation of a strong wardrobe. It’s a requirement for many situations, and a man without one is not adequately equipped to deal with the world. This episode is all about building that foundation, from the ground up, in a systematic and effective way.
You’re going to learn all about each aspect of a suit, from the jacket and trousers, to the tie, to the Balmoral Oxford shoes. I’ve laid it all out for you in this episode, so that the next time you’re at a wedding, maybe you’re giving away your little girl at her wedding ceremony, you’ll be ready for that special occasion, and how you dress and look will simply be a non-issue. You’ll know with confidence that you will look great and fit the part, because you’ve built a strong wardrobe with solid suit options.
That’s what this episode is all about. There’s a fair amount of detail in this one, so consider taking notes, or bookmarking this show notes page, as this is something you should remember or come back to as you build your wardrobe. The benefit of having the right ingredients for a suit presentation is that you’ll be ready for those special occasions in life when it is necessary, and you will be so glad you put in the effort now to build up that wardrobe.

The Essential Suit:
- Jacket
- Colors: Navy, grey or charcoal grey. Not black, as that is too formal for normal occasions
- 2 or 3 button jacket
- Notched lapels
- Single or double vent back. Be careful of no vent
- Avoid ticket pockets at first
- Use a pocket square
- Trousers
- Same material as jacket
- Either no pleats or single pleat
- Larger or tall men: cuffs. More average height: no cuffs, which will make you look taller
- Shirt:
- At least 3 shirts that work with each suit
- Go with variations of whites and blues
- Classic point collar
- Single or double button cuffs
- Tie: Conservative colors, do not draw too much attention, at least 2 ties, one solid and one with conservative print
- Shoes: Dark colored, black, Balmoral Oxfords, closed lacing, thin lacing
Mindset Takeaway:
Establish a strong foundation in your first few suits, using the guidelines above, and then don’t be shy about wearing them for appropriate occasions!
