How to prevent your dress shirt collar from making your face look too large
The men's narrow point dress shirt collar belongs on men whose faces are round. Some men have naturally round faces and some are round because of their weight.
All men with round faces need to know how to frame their face well with a dress shirt collar.
A Round Face Has Different Needs In A Collar
Men's dress shirt collars are the starting place in a man's outfit to balance and harmonize his overall look. Not every face will pair well with every collar, however. Different men's faces have different needs in shirt collars.
Men with round faces, like men narrow or triangular faces, have needs which proper clothing such as a custom suit or hat will work to even up a man's overall look. For solution in the shirt collar, we turn to the narrow point collar.
Defining A Round Face And Its Proper Shirt Collar
A man with a round face isn't necessarily a heavy man, but his face does have a few characteristics which set it apart.
First, the face isn't overly tall; second, the face is wide; third, the jaw line is shallow. Some might call Gabriel Byrne round-faced but his jaw is rather sharp, what is called a triangular face.
Brad Pitt has a shallow jaw and a wide face but his face is too tall to be round. Thus, when a man has all three of these characteristics in his face he will need the round-faced man's shirt collar: the narrow point collar.
When a collar has narrow points, the tips of either side of the collar are closer together. The distance between the two points is called spread, therefore, this collar has a narrower spread.
The first of these three collars, the spread collar, would be a disastrous choice for framing a round face. Rather than drawing the eye up into the face, it would cause the eye to move side to side (to see all of the collar).
This action causes the face to look even wider and rounder, a most undesirable effect, especially for heavy men who want their clothes to slim them.
The standard collar in the middle would help but not as much as the narrow point collar on the right. Because a person gets looked over from face to shoes and back to face, this collar guides the onlooker's eye downward and then right back to the face on the way up without undue sideways glances.
Shirt Collars Mask Flaws And Slim You Down
If a man has an intensely round face, the narrow point dress shirt collar will mitigate its tendency to unbalance an otherwise sharp look. On the flip side, a man with a long, narrow face needs to stay away from narrow point collars as these will make his face look far too long; he needs a different collar to make him look his best.
When a heavy man whose face is rounded wears a narrow point collar, the vertical lines created help keep the eye going straight down and then back up, which is necessary to prevent sideways looking and thus emphasizing a man's width.
With the right dress shirt collar, a round-faced gentleman, heavy or not, will be able to look good and have a harmonious image.
