Luxury vs cheap
That's a big deal when you're buying:
- Cars
- TV sets
- Shoes
- A suit & tie
But is it the same for underwear?
Does it really matter whether your underwear is high-end or el cheapo?
Honestly – yes!
I've tried out 25 brands over the last 5 years.
Different price points = different levels of comfort, quality & attention to detail
The thing is…
While you usually don't show off your skivvies…
It still helps to look & feel AMAZING in them…
Because confidence is sexy.
So let me explain the 5 key differences between luxury and cheap men's underwear.
This post is brought to you by Tani.
I’ve been with this brand for 2 years – they're always my first pick when I travel.
Why? Because their quality men’s underwear is the REAL DEAL.
I've let my friends try some pairs – they all find Tani super comfortable, functional & stylish.

Comparing Men's Underwear: #1 – Fabric
No surprise here. The difference between the fabrics of cheap and luxury underwear is almost just like night and day.
With most kinds of clothing, fabric is king. But it's especially the case for underwear because you want it to be a workhorse. A survivor.
You will NOT get that from low-end underwear. They're typically made of an inferior cotton – where the fiber is short and the thread is quite weak.
Now you may find polyester types to be more durable. They're also thinner and lighter than your average cotton underwear. Plus easier to wash.
The problem? Polyester has relatively poor absorption power. It's not recommended during hotter days.
And then we have luxury underwear – those which are manufactured by high-end brands.
The yarn used is both tight and thin, which allows them to feel incredibly soft. They consistently have a great build and stitching (with no excess material whatsoever). And that justifies their higher prices.
Now that you understand the beauty of luxury boxers and briefs, where do you get them? Well – you don't need to look further than Tani.
This company uses only specialized, less common materials to create the BEST (not just “good”) men's underwear these days. They strive to be the best. They have a team that travels the world to research new fabrics. They also look into innovative techniques for knitting and finishing.
Tani sources the highest grade of a fabric every time. That's why they've got a fantastic collection of underwear, thermal wear, and loungewear – which can't be compared to other brands. Their secret lies in selecting world-class fabrics:
- Micro Modal Air
- Swiss Cotton
- Roica
- Cupro
- Superfine
- Micro Tencel

In short:
- Cheap – Fabric quality isn't great. The underwear will start wearing out after 10-20 washes.
- Luxury – The underwear has a prime fabric quality. It still looks good after 50-100 washes.
Comparing Men's Underwear: #2 – Fit
This one isn't that obvious. But when it comes down to it, luxury underwear slightly edges out their cheap counterparts in terms of fit.
I say “slightly” since it boils down to some small incremental differences.
But if you're a guy who wants to gain maximum comfort (and confidence) from his boxer or briefs – those differences can be significant.
Why do luxury ones fit better? One big reason is the stretch fabric. High-end underwear would have an easier time “adjusting” to your body shape thanks to their 4-way stretch fabric.
That fabric is technically more flexible and resilient (expands both crosswise and lengthwise) than 2-way stretch fabric that's used for cheap underwear. Men who are more prone to skin irritations at their “hotspots” will benefit from a 4-way stretch fabric the most.
But here's the catch. A luxury brand would likely design underwear for a smaller market – specifically fit or thin individuals. They don't mention this outright even though it's implied by the available sizes.
Meanwhile, the low-end brands at Walmart or Target would cover a wide range of body types and waistlines because they reach out to everybody. So if you're not in great shape – this is one case where you'll be forced to go cheap.
Comparing Men's Underwear: #3 – Function
What's your lifestyle? Are you pretty active or do you stay in a cubicle or classroom all day? If it's the latter, you'll probably be fine wearing cheap underwear.
But let's say you were training for a marathon – or spending several hours working up meals in a hot kitchen. Those are situations that require underwear with special support needs.
You want something that's extra functional. Maybe it's the kind with a front pouch design. Or maybe it's a jockstrap which efficiently wicks away moisture. Those features can spare you from potential bodily issues like rashes, chafing, bleeding or pain in the genitals.
High-end brands provide more protection for your crotch and thighs – especially as you sweat and move around. Sometimes, you might forget you're wearing them at all because they're perfectly light and fitted! That's why the luxury route is totally worth it for active guys.
Comparing Men's Underwear: #4 – Customer Service
It's the reality of the clothing industry: the larger the company, the worse their customer service is.
You'll find that out when you try contacting the company that made the cheap underwear you just bought.
Say you wanted to address a concern – like chemicals in your boxer briefs had been irritating your skin.
If it turns out you just can't get a hold of somebody, there's not much you can do. They don't care about an individual the way smaller companies do.
But with luxury companies, it's a complete 180. Chances are you'll easily get to speak with someone who has decision-making power. Or even the CEO or the founder himself!
Those companies will make sure you get compensated for the problem you experienced. They'll also be open to your ideas about changing underwear design or other suggestions. They'll treat you as more than a customer – like a friend. Trust and loyalty are much more important to them.
Comparing Men's Underwear: #5 – Options
Finally, which category do you think offers more variety? And a greater chance of picking out something that's really you?
It's luxury underwear without a doubt. You simply have to browse the Tani USA site – and you'll immediately see many options for color, fabric, and style.
That's the clear advantage when you're a guy who likes certain colors other than black and white (or perhaps your wife or girlfriend does).
Since cheap underwear means mass-produced, you can't expect them to be unique or “individualistic” in any way. They're made to be disposed of quickly. Not as legitimate fashion accessories.
Ultimately, it's your call whether or not to spend more on your underwear. Everyone has their own preference. At least I've shared with you the benefits of the luxury type.
But what if you can't decide which STYLE of underwear is best? Read this article on comparing men's boxers, briefs, and boxer briefs to help you figure that out.
