JV: Well, all last year, we were on a mastermind together, so we got to know all kinds of things about each other and it was a fun time. But for our listeners, how would you describe yourself in your own words?
Antonio: I would just say I'm a regular guy. I've got a family. I live in Wisconsin. I grew up in Texas. I just found a way to make a go of it online and I really enjoyed that I've created a business that I think makes a difference in the world and I'd been able to automate and create a lot of systems in that company that allow me to create other business which I think really make this world a better place.
JV: You are great at video marketing. You're incredible at video marketing. You created systems as well. And so, what is that specific difference that you aim to make for your customers?
Antonio: Well, for my customers, I like to take an angle that's a little bit off the beaten path. So, for a lot of guys, fashion and style isn't even something they've ever considered. But to be able to show them how to take this and how it applies to everything else in their life and to get them to take action, make these changes and then they're able to nail that interview, get the better job, meet the person they'd been wanting to meet, that's where I see just some amazing things.
I mean, I created the testimonial page and we got hundreds, I mean, well over, I think, 300 testimonials on this and I don't even post all of them. So pretty cool. It really does motivate me with what I do.
JV: You and I actually met through New Media Expo a couple of years ago and I remember going — You were like the best dressed guy there. And then I got to know you were in the military, you got an MBA, probably not the background that people are thinking of for somebody who was actually doing custom suits as well as Real Men Real Style. What was it that attracted you to this particular industry and doing what you're doing?
Antonio: Take a few steps back. I was always interested in the way and the psychology and biology of human behavior. That's actually what my degree is in undergrad in addition to a degree in philosophy.
I went to Marine Corps, had a great experience there and then I went and lived abroad. But I was always interested in the way we present ourselves. And it started with a problem when I was in Ukraine and I could not find a well-fitted suit for the life of me to get married in.
So I ended up having a suit that was second — Really actually wasn't that great. It was made over in Russia. I just didn't feel comfortable in the suit. Then when I was interviewing for MBA programs, I was flown out to Cornell in Ithaca and I knew that I wanted to look really good going to an Ivy League school. And so it was something that — I used to travel in custom tailor.
I ended up going and getting my MBA at Texas. But what I discovered is that there was a huge opening in this sphere. So I kind of went into custom clothing as more of a mercenary than a missionary. My goal was simply I saw a huge opportunity. I thought I could really make a go in this industry. It was a lot harder than I thought. And I eventually pivoted my company and I found that it was in information marketing.
And actually, specifically the clothing wasn't — I mean, I like the clothing. It's cool. But what I really like is helping men and helping them learn to use image, presentation, to get what they want out of life. And that's really where I've positioned myself as more of an information marketer. And, of course, I still have my custom clothier and a few other businesses but it's really being able to make that difference with the information that I specialize in.
JV: Right. And I have to say I've looked at your free ebooks that you can get from Real Men Real Style. You've got really very affordable courses that people can take. And this is great information because most people don't have a clue of what shirt to go with what suit to go with what tie or why. And you just break it down and you're such a master at marketing. So I want to jump into the video marketing because the last time we talked about it, and I'm almost going to be embarrassed because it was probably millions more, but you've had over 5 million views from your videos on YouTube.
Antonio: Maybe about a year and a half ago. We're like closing on 13 million now.
This post is an interview transcript. Click here to listen Conscious Millionaire Podcast with JV Crum III featuring Antonio Centeno.
JV: That's what I was going to say. We were in the mastermind. I remember it was 5 million and we haven't updated. I'm sure it's millions more.
Antonio: Well, that's what I love about systems and creating something that actually runs without you. I actually pull back on video about a year ago and I focus on other parts of my business. And it continued to grow and to snowball. Now, I'm just getting back into it. And I had to create a video system basically where I now have a guy that edits for me full time and more now back up to shooting a couple of videos at a week. But yeah, it is amazing how when you set these things up correctly, how they can continue to grow. And if you focus on information that's timeless, it makes it even better.
JV: So, yeah. And, I think, that's really the message here is that your video marketing, if it's going to be faddish or it's news kind of video marketing, then two months now it may be dead. But if you focus on the areas of your business that are timeless and everybody has areas in the business that are, then you can continue to use this video marketing. So if an entrepreneur is listening today or someone who is even thinking, “Hey, I want to jump in. I want to start this entrepreneur world.”
What are the things that they need to do so that they can start using video marketing effectively and at a low cost? Because for a lot of people, having a tight budget is really an important part of being able to build their business.
Antonio: I would say the first part for me is always mindset and it's getting over the belief that you have to spend a lot of money, that it's difficult. We create these barriers for ourselves and we create this presence that we get stuck into. And, JV, I think you know a lot about that. But, I mean, JV, you saw everything going on in this last year with the ice bucket challenge, right?
JV: Right. Oh, yeah. That was crazy.
Antonio: And all those people that put up videos, they were all professional videographers, right?
JV: No.
Antonio: No, exactly. They were just everyone.
JV: Somebody with an android and iPhone.
Antonio: Exactly. And so what is stopping you? If your mother, if six-year olds, if 19-year olds are using that technology and simply putting something up, what is stopping you from taking and filming a quick video for a valued client and simply thanking them? Yeah, it's a video for one person but you know it has a huge psychological effect on that client that you took the time to do that. Or putting together that same video and maybe spreading it out there.
If you've got 10,000 people in your email list already, why not sending out a video? People want to connect with you in video especially if you have, if you're really motivated and excited about what you have to say. It enables you to connect in a way that the written word cannot. And I speak from experience. I put out probably, I don't know, 500, 600 articles. On our websites, they got a lot of traffic. Art of Manliness, we get like 15 million views a month. I've seen more reaction from my videos than I ever saw from articles over on that website or on my own website. Just so many more people reach out and most importantly also increase my sales threefold.
JV: Wow, that's really important. So what are the steps someone should take when they're starting out and they don't know anything about doing video and there's probably a lot of fear because it just seems that's too difficult, that's too hard or I'm not going to look good or sound good. I mean, you know all the fears everybody goes through because you deal with this. What's the step someone should take to just make it simple and get ten of them done or five of them done, get them out there, get something going because until you get it going, you don't even get feedback. You don't even know whether it worked.
Antonio: Yes. So, first off, just make it simple. Most of us have a smartphone or something. I mean, literally if you've got an iPhone or droid or something, just connect it right to your computer and you can transfer. I mean, take a video of somebody else. It doesn't even have to be you.
So that is the easiest thing. And simply put it on your computer, see how simple it is to do that. Then you wanted to take the next step, which is actually making something that you would want to share with others. And also coming to the realization that it's okay, your first ten videos, your first, honestly, 25 to maybe even 50 videos aren't going to be perfect. In fact, I will say your first group of videos may actually suck.
However, that's okay. It happens with all of us. In fact, if you look at the worst video I ever shot is still the number one review over on to Blue Yeti on Amazon. If you will check, go to Amazon, type in Blue Yeti, it's a USB microphone, the current one I'm using, that video still is number one on reviews. I mean, it was just a test video. I shot it in my — Where was I? I was in my kitchen at my house. The lighting was horrible. The sound isn't that great. Yet that video did. I mean, it continues to do well. So it's about getting started and putting that first bit out there.
JV: Okay. So they're going to get started. What is the kind of content that's likely to have more value on the internet for them as a business than other content? What should they be focused on?
Antonio: Well, initially, everyone wants to get a whole lot of views. I would say don't worry so much about the views. Worry about solving problems. So my first hundred videos, I am basically a talking head. I have a dark background, I believe, and it's just me talking to the camera for five to ten minutes. I'm simply spilling all of this information that was stuck. And I knew though that people would like it because, one, there wasn't a whole lot of competition. And, two, I stayed so specific and I really did focus in.
So I went towards the longer tail and I specifically went after giving people the answers they so desperately wanted. And I knew what they wanted because I'd already started my email list and I had people emailing me all the time what their biggest problems were. Part of my email list is that — One of the first emails you'll get from me is I ask what's your biggest problem? What's holding you back? Now I've set it up so I'm actually quantifying all of this information now.
But it used to be that I would just simply go in and grab some of these questions. And I still do this occasionally. And I just answer those questions straight up. Now, there are those that really they only want to put out maybe 10 videos and they want them all to go viral. And that's not really my style. I think that's very hard to do. There's companies with million dollar budget which still can't figure out how to do that.
So maybe you can. And if that's your route, cool. Go try to figure it out. But for me, I focus on what I do know and I go for those. Kind of think about like baseball. Are you a baseball fan, JV?
This post is an interview transcript. Click here to listen Conscious Millionaire Podcast with JV Crum III featuring Antonio Centeno.
JV: I'm enough of a baseball fan to follow the conversation here.
Antonio: All right. Let's say, to get into the hall of fame, you don't have to have — You can strike out six to seven times every time you go up to bat and you could still be in the hall of fame. And it's not about hitting a homerun every time. It's about getting those singles, getting those doubles, occasionally getting those triples. And then you occasionally get those homeruns when you're least expecting it seems like.
So I focus on the singles and the doubles and the triples. And knowing that, okay, I can hit that, I'm going to hit this single up. I may only get 5,000 views. And that may sound like a lot to some people. I mean, that's only much to others. But based off, I know that what I put out is very laser pointed and I'm going to get the right views.
JV: Right. And that's critical. That's critical.
Antonio: Yeah. And that's what I key in and I focus in on. Because this is for business. This isn't going to be a cat video or Charlie bit his finger. I'm not aiming for that. I'm looking to reach the right people who will helpfully — And run through — I've got it statistically set up through my automation marketing system that I know a percentage that get on my email list will eventually convert into buyers of either my style system, A Man's Guide to Style, one of my books or possibly one of my consulting services.
JV: And what I'm hearing amid all this is the singles and the doubles and every once in a while a triple or a homerun is consistency across time.
Antonio: I would say it is important to be consistent especially at the beginning and to give it a fair shake. I think it was Gary Vaynerchuk. I was reading a tweet the other day and he was like, “Hey.” Somebody said that, “Hey, I tried what you said and it didn't work. I've tried that a million times.” And Gary's like, right back, “You didn't try it a million times. Did you try it 100 times?” And the guy is like, “No.”
He's like, “Well, did you try 50 times?” “No.” “How many times did you try?” He's like, “Two.” That's not a million times. So you need to set yourself a goal of, okay, I'm going to create 50 videos. I'm going to create 20 videos. My first goal was to create 100 videos.
And I batched processed the filming of my videos. And, I think, JV, you actually do this with your podcast. You shoot quite a few in a day because you know that the setup, getting into the mentality, all of that has to happen. And I do that with videos. I mean, I was going through and I'll shoot 14 videos in one morning. I also keep them shorter. I'm not saying you have to shoot 14 in one day. That's quite a bit.
But I would say that try to batch. Eliminate all of those barriers which are going to hold you back. For me, getting in front of a video camera is a bit intimidating because I'm talking — I'm in the style and fashion industry. People are tearing me up because my shoulders on my jacket are apparently a quarter of an inch too wide on one side. And I've had people say that I should just give up and quit.
You got to have a little bit of thick skin to be able to put up. I would say for most people though, it is not that harsh and they are their own worst critic. And they just need to set up a day, shoot some videos, shoot five to ten, and then release them over a period of a couple of weeks.
JV: How long do you find to be the most effective link for videos just getting information out there to attract the kind of customers you want?
Antonio: Well, if you read all the articles, all the info out there, everyone is going to say three minutes is the perfect time period. Now, that's a bunch of BS. Because there is no perfect time period. There is the right time period for your audience. My videos usually go anywhere from eight to 12 minutes. Now, a lot of people are going to say that's really long. However, that's what enabled me to set myself apart from the pack and people love that about my content.
I've since started going a little bit shorter because I am trying to reach a larger broader audience. But, I think, initially, what drew people to my channel is I did take the time to explain in detail why you would want to do something or why this style mattered or this or that. And it would take me that amount of time. I'm now kind of evolving more in trying to get, I think, more into the bite size because I'll be launching my own podcast and that's where I'm going to take a longer form content.
JV: Yeah, so you can have a contrast. So part of that is being authentic to your voice and also finding out what works in your marketplace. But you were authentic in wanting to brand yourself a little different from other people. But that's what Real Men Real Style does to begin with. It's a different brand. It's not the same brand as everybody else's style brands.
Antonio: Exactly. Yeah, be yourself out there. But also have the — Set measuring points. Because if you go out there and you put out 100 videos and on that 100th video, on the 100th day, if you're still getting only 20 views, you are probably doing something wrong. And there's other places that you could focus in on. It's not going to be putting out more video. It's working on your marketing and promotion.
JV: Yeah, absolutely. When I had Rhonda Britten on — It's a great episode, if you haven't heard it — she really liberated, I think, people when she said each person is going to have to choose the marketing that's authentic for you. For some people, it's going to be blogging. For other people, it's articles. For some people, it's going to be podcasting. For others, it's going to be video marketing. It's not going to be the same for everyone. But you need to find the one that's the right voice for you. And then really leverage that because that's how you're going to connect best.
Antonio: Agreed.
JV: Well, up next are the conscious questions.
This is a short message to tell you about a free gift JV has for you.
Be certain to download your free copy of First Millionaire Manifesto: Seven Steps to Seven Figures. This is a must have for your business library. Go to consciousmillionaire.com now or in the United States, text the word “million” to 38470. Again, text “million” to 38470 now.
JV: Welcome back. I'm here with my guest, Antonio Centeno, who has Real Men Real Style and it's time for the conscious question. You are a consummate entrepreneur. You really know so much about systems, about marketing. You leverage incredibly well. If you are mentoring an early stage entrepreneur, what would be three things you would tell them to do?
Antonio: All right, the three things — And I work with quite a few. I run a business with style consulting group. We also have High Speed Elite. It's for veterans transitioning out. We really focus in on making them understand what — I really dive into sales. And I know that that's for a lot — It's funny, going to business school, they didn't teach us anything about sales.
JV: Nothing, right?
Antonio: But you have to be able to sell not only your product but you got to be able to sell yourself. And that is something I feel is a skill that is really, really under — Yeah, it's just not something — A lot of people are afraid of it. They think of sales as maybe the used car salesman. You're trying to sell something that people don't want. And that nothing could be further from the truth. So tied with sales is going to be copyrighting.
And when you can understand copyrighting, you understand that your goal as a salesman, which most of us are, if not all of us, sell them something. Even a pastor, he is selling a belief. He is selling an idea. He is selling motivation. But if you don't understand copyrighting, you don't understand how to get people motivated to take action because there's always an alternative that they could be going down if they're not going to — I mean, they could choose to do nothing.
And that is the alternative to what you're trying to get them to do. And if you understand copyrighting, you understand how to create sense of urgency, how to create scarcity and you want to use these tools ethically. But at the same time, you realize that — And what drives me is the why. That's the final thing I would focus on is I know that my programs and what I do changes lives. I have men go through my programs and they get raises, they meet people that they've always wanted to meet, they walk taller, they feel better. They live a better life. And that's what motivates me.
JV: So what is an approach? A marketing strategy is actually added sales. I mean, we've been talking about marketing the whole time. But is there one specific thing that you have really found helped you get more sales?
Antonio: I think Bob Burg talked about this once. He wrote a book on it called The Go-Giver. And I'm a big fan of being the first one to give value. It's a law of reciprocity. You give something. People want to give back to you. And it feels so good. Nothing is like starting a day and reaching out to others and, “Hey, how can I help you?” JV, I get every single day at least a dozen, if not more, of people reaching out to me asking, basically filling out my PR page, filling out my “advertise with us” page and it's always about me, me, me, I want you to promote me, I want you to promote my kick start, I want you to sell my products for me.
It's always me. They're trying to take from me. Very rarely does someone reach out to me and say, “Hey, Antonio, I love what you're doing. How can I help you? How can I make your life easier?” Now, of course, they may own a company that makes hats and they maybe a great writer and they may want to eventually be invited to a guest poster. But they realize that I want to be surrounded by people who our goal is to help each other and to grow together. Not people that are just trying to take from me. One of my little pet peeves, if you ever reach out to me.
JV: Yeah. Actually, Antonio, I think that it's great you brought that up because I have the same thing. I have all this like 5500 connections on LinkedIn. I got a lot of people approaching me and seriously I have amazing connections. Today, I've had two people — I'm doing seven shows today. You said I batch them. I do. I have six that I'm doing tomorrow. Two other people I've met on LinkedIn originally. But we met through mutual interest with one another.
The vast majority of people who reach out are just like you are experiencing and it's this long sales pitch. It's click. It's gone. I'm not even going to read it. Because that's no way to begin a relationship with anyone with saying, “Hey, I'm so glad we met. Now, let me tell you what I've decided I want to sell you.” Nobody is interested in that. You're not going to attract anyone. We both know there's a huge difference between the sales we bring and that bottom line profit. What's an approach you use to assure that that bottom line profit is growing?
Antonio: Well, I try to measure as much as I can. And I have to admit that I need to get better at this. I just had a mutual friend in town, Ryan Masters, and he's looking everything. But he's helped me do a good job of making sure that all of my finances are running through a single system where I can easily see it and I can hold myself accountable. I've also been considering — I haven't done this getting back to having a sales coach. Ryan has helped me with that a bit. But, yeah, you need someone to hold you accountable.
I've got goals that I put on a board in front of me. I use the Eisenhower Matrix so I've got urgent, non-urgent going across the top and important and non-important going up and down. And a lot of my sales goals right there in front of me so I can see it. And it's off the computer because I realize — I mean, there's only so much we can look at on our computers. And I have got double screens. But when I have things on boards and in front of me, it's right there in front of me and I can't escape it.
JV: What's a business or personal growth book you'd recommend?
Antonio: Well, I would say for personal growth, let's go to Man's Search for Meaning by Vktor Frankl.
JV: Oh my gosh, nobody's ever suggested that. When I read it in high school and when I was doing graduate work in LA, my first graduate in psychology, I actually had the opportunity to go and hear Viktor Frankl speak.

Antonio: That's pretty amazing.
JV: Yeah. It was at the synagogue. It was amazing life-changing kind of event. Because that's such a powerful book.
Antonio: Yeah. I mean, I won't get into it too deep. Let's just say what's going to keep you motivated and alive when your pregnant wife dies and is killed in a concentration camp?
When your brother, when your parents, all of them, are killed in a concentration camp and you're there? I mean, how do you find meaning in hopelessness? Because as an entrepreneur, this is sometimes a very lonely path. And you feel sometimes the world is against you. And how do you find meaning and purpose in what you're doing? And I think it's something that's not really talked about. It's a dark secret in entrepreneurship. But, I mean, we brought a lot of stress on ourselves and we have to look at ourselves at the end of the day.
Because all the time we put into our companies, we may be giving up on family, we may be giving up on relationships, and are we actually, at the end of the day, going to be proud of what we did?
JV: I really appreciate you bringing up that book because it is such a powerful book. How do you get yourself motivated in the morning so that you have an awesomely successful day?
Antonio: Well, I have three beautiful children, two of which consistently find their way into my bed. So my motivation is–
JV: And you're about to have a fourth beautiful child.
Antonio: I am about to have a fourth. So another girl. So I'll have three girls and one son. But I would have to say — Yeah, watching them sleep and being around just, I mean, unconditional love and realizing also that it's important for me to set the example and to show them that life is what we make of it. And we've got some family values. I try to go over them in the morning. I'm not perfect. It doesn't always happen. But just this morning, we went over our family value list and I'm pretty excited to be raising people, I think, who are going to make this world a better place.
JV: Antonio, what does the word “conscious” mean to you?
Antonio: Awareness in the sense like most of us walk through life and — Actually, even this morning. I mean, once the first time you made a conscious decision in the morning. Probably for most of us, it wasn't until actually we're confronted with an email that forced us to think. But waking up, eating, driving to work, for most of us we're almost unconscious. We're just kind of going through the motions. And I think if you can live a life in which you're more conscious, that would be pretty amazing.
I guess, I go back to, I think, some of the Japanese philosophy my grandmother, not by blood but my grandfather [0:27:20] [Indiscernible] when he was a Merchant Marine after World War II and I just think of how she focused on all those little things and everything was about being conscious and being in the moment.
JV: What's the legacy you want to leave?
Antonio: I would say it's probably going to be a this point the biggest one having children that go out there and do more — They enabled me to live on. And for them to look at — In my family, there isn't a patriarch or anyone that we look to. There isn't really much knowledge of even our family history and where we come from or what we stood for. So I'm thinking that in 100 years, that will be different, that my great, great grandchildren will be able to look at what I've created and they'll be able to look at this and say, “You know, great, great granddad, he was a pretty awesome guy.” So, I guess, maybe that would be it.
JV: I think that's a wonderful legacy. Is there a cause that you want to give a shout out too?
Antonio: I would talk about a program that I'm running with John Lee Dumos over at EntrepreneurOnFire and Tom Morkes of Insurgent Publishing. We're all vets and we've gotten out at different points. But it is going to be High Speed Low Drag. And that's our initiative to transform military transition assistance. And having transitioned out of the Marines in 2003 after Iraq, John did about the same thing, I think he got out in 2005 and Tom just got out about a year ago.
But I've got a brother that's EOD in the Army and I see these guys coming back. Some of them, they've got broken bodies. They've got, some of them, broken spirits. And this is really sad because this is some of our best brightest people that really wanted to make a difference. And my goal at High Speed Low Drag is to inspire them, to introduce them and to show them so many vet entrepreneurs out there and what they're doing through podcasts, through video, and to inspire them to become the leaders in the business world that they were in the military.
JV: I love that. Up next are the coach notes where I'll be highlighting the show's golden nugget and giving you your conscious millionaire action step to grow your business. Here we go with the coaching notes for Antonio Centeno. These are all on how to create your videos. The first coaching nugget is to make it simple. You want to make it of you, of someone else. Remember the mindset is that it's easy and you don't have to spend a lot of money. In fact, you can use your android or iPhone to make a simple easy video.
You second nugget is to make it something you really want to share. It doesn't have to be great the first time or even the first five or ten or 20 or 50. The whole idea is to get some practice and getting something out there. Now, the golden nugget number three is that for your best content it should solve a specific problem. Now, there's no magic time some studies and some ideas are that about three minutes is great. Antonio said he makes his eight to 12 minutes. Some people make them five to ten.
So you might want to experiment. You might start with something short, two or three minutes, just to kind of get your feet wet. But the best content is solving a specific problem because that has a long tail. You want to solve a problem that's evergreen. Because when you make a specific like just how do you Christmas shopping, well, that's going to be expired when you get to January. It's no longer going to be relevant.
So you want to get singles and doubles. Single might be 5,000 views. Double might be at 10,000 views. You're not looking for everything to be a homerun. You're just wanting to get material out there that starts getting attention. So what's the coaching action step? You guessed it. I want you to go out there and this week I want you to be committed that in the next seven days, using your android, iPhone, any other phone that you have, you're just going to make five simple easy videos and you're going to get them up on YouTube channel.
Welcome back, and I want to say, Antonio, this has been a great show. I knew it would be because you are just a fount of wisdom and insight and entrepreneurial drive. You are the consummate entrepreneur. I know a lot of our listeners are going to want to find out about Real Men Real Style. They're going to learn more about you. How can they best get in touch with you?
Antonio: Well, just go ahead and do a Google search for Real Men Real Style and go to my contact form. I think they'll enjoy it. I have a little bit of humor with my contact form. And there could be a whole list in there about creating barriers to make sure the right people reach out to you.
JV: Yes. And remember, do not pitch Antonio when you reach out to him about what you want from him. Offer how you might have a mutual relationship and how you might have something to offer him. I want to thank you for listening to our show today. As always, you can find all of the coach notes at consciousmillionairepodcast.com. And Antonio, thanks so much for being a guest today.
Antonio: You're welcome, JV. Great to talk to you.
