Hi! I'm Antonio Centeno. I'm the founder of Real Men Real Style.
Today, gentlemen, I'm going to be answering the question is vaping cool. I was asked by one of my readers. He's going,
Antonio, I'm looking to vape. I have some friends that are doing it. What do you think? Is this something cool, something I should try?
To be straight up, guys, my opinion here is no. Vaping is not cool. I've spoken with smokers, vapers, people that aren’t involved and don’t do any of this stuff, we all agreed that vaping is not cool. However, it is something that for certain people, a.k.a. smokers looking to quit, there is statistical evidence out there that this can help.
However, most people out there, and in fact, the largest growing demographic of people that are starting to vape are nonsmokers, are teenagers that are picking it up. I've got some friends in the area.
I've got one girl, she works for me, she's about to turn 20 years old, and she's telling me that, really, there's not much to do in this town if you're under the age of 21. Again, we live in Central Wisconsin. She said there's a hookah bar or one of these things. People go there. There are a lot of vapers. It's a social thing to do. So that's where we’re seeing a pick up.

I have a number of vaping companies reach out to me over the last couple of years. Let's just say they're willing to pay my rates for advertising. I've refused to take them on because as a father and as a nonsmoker, I don't look at it as a healthy habit. And that's what it is, it's a habit.
It's a habit with a lot of information out there that is not fully been tested.
There are definitely those for, those against it, those that say it doesn’t have any effect, those that say it's nonaddictive, those stayed at California that says it's actually hazardous to your health and you should avoid it, and they want to band it. Then again, it's California, they ban everything.
I understand there's a lot of conflicting data. In fact, if you go out there, vape I think was one of the top searched words in all of 2014 and trending in 2015. So that all being said, I would love to hear from you guys down in the comments below.
I did the ion research. I'm going to give you guys one reason why I think it would be a good idea for certain demographic, and then I'm going to give you about four or five reasons why I'm against it for anyone that's just looking to start something up.
Again, I don't think it's cool but I want to hear from you guys down in the comments what are your opinions, what research have you seen, what studies have you heard of, what personal stories can you share, and what are your thoughts on this subject.

Okay. So who is it going to be good for?
I've alluded to and I've kind of talked about it. If you are looking to quit smoking, there is some 2014 research out there that shows about, I think it was like 21% of people that start to vape who are smokers actually quit. I'm going to go over to New York good friend, Kelsey. He's over in Phoenix, Arizona. Two weeks ago I was spending time with him, talking with him about this very subject. He agreed that if you just start to vape, know that's not cool.
He picked up smoking in one of his first jobs. He just started to smoke. For a decade it became a very nasty habit. He used the wake in the morning, first thing before he did anything, even a drink of water, was to smoke a cigarette. He said ever since he started to vape that urge is gone. He can make himself a cup of coffee. He can get up and walk around drinking a glass of water. He will vape sometime in the morning.
The urge isn't as bad as it was with cigarettes. In addition, he's not waking up and having to clear his throat and having this nasty stuff — basically yesterday’s or the night before cigarette smoke, basically come out of his throat and lungs and just spiting this stuff up. So he's feeling better in the morning. He doesn't feel that pain that he used to have in his throat in the morning.

Again, these are pretty small things. The most significant thing for Kelsey was that he actually quit smoking. He was in that 21% of people that they just give it up.
Here's what's also cool, is 23% also — and this is separate from the 21%, so we’re talking about 44% of people actually either quit or reduced the amount of cigarettes they smoke by over half.
Again, I'm going to link over to this research. It's going to be at Real Men Real Style. I'm going to have an entire article on vaping, the pros, cons. I'm going to go into more detail, link over to the research. I want you guys to go check that out.
If you're a smoker, vaping used in this manner may actually be a great alternative. My understanding is that there are many places where, yes, they ban cigarettes but vaping technically doesn't fall under that. So you're going to be able to get away with it.
Now, let's talk about if you don't smoke. If you're just looking for something to do, is vaping cool? Again, no, I do not think it cool. I say this from a father, from a nonsmoker.
I look at people that are vaping and I don't put it in the same category of cigarettes but I do look at it as a nasty habit. Why would you do this?
When we look at cigarettes and health, that stuff have been proven, tobacco does kill. It took 50 to 60 years for a contested research to go back and forth. Yes, they have clearly shown that tobacco, cigarettes kill.
They haven't shown that yet with vaping. With the amount of money that's going into vaping, it may be something that this industry develops and pushes back. I'm hoping they don't repeat the same issues. What is very clear is they have no long term studies on the effect of vaping. It's unregulated
So you're seeing all different types of formulas put together out there. People are putting this stuff in their bodies. They don't know where it's coming from. I would be very careful if I were you. Again, it doesn't matter where it's made, really. If you're making your own, you probably know what's going in there.
Gentlemen, be very careful of it. It's unregulated. I don't think everything has to be regulated. I'm pretty much a free market kind of guy. I would like to have a better understanding of where this stuff is coming from.
Me, personally, without those long term studies, I don't want to be some guinea pig for them to say, “Yes, this does cause cancer,” because they have shown that there are some carcinogens in this. Formaldehyde in certain levels has been shown to be in there. In addition, it also contains some nanoparticles. I mean really small particles that can lead to inflammation of the lungs and of the throat and of the mouth.
So think about what you're doing. There are probably other habits that I would rather have such as waking up early, such as exercising. I know they're not as exciting but you know what, those are still habits that you can develop. There are social things that you can do with your friends. I have a lot of friends that go to the gym socially. You can do that. You don’t have to sit around and just vape or smoke or go to hookah bar.
What are some other things that I'm seeing? Again, we talked about how it's unregulated. WE talked about how it's untested. I think the untested thing is a big thing. These long term studies, a take time. They're just not going to come up with this stuff the next year. We’re going to see studies coming out for the next few decades. They're going to show the long term effects.

I think this is going to become a bigger and bigger industry. You're going to have to be strong and say, “It's not really cool. It's unregulated, untested. I'm probably going to stay away from it for now.”
Who's really susceptible to this? If you are under the age of 25, especially if you're under the age of 20, there are not a whole lot of things to do if you're under the age of 21 here in the United States.
When it goes to nightlife and things, you're not allowed in a lot of those places. I know for a lot of them, the alternative versus drinking alcohol is to sit around and vape or to have something like that. I with say be very careful. Try not to pick up the habit.
Especially for those that are looking to quit cigarettes, they introduce nicotine to it. So it is something that can become addictive.
Anything can become a habit. I mean I've got certain habits of the way I move my hands around. I know you guys talk about this. All of these things are habits. In my opinion, what's cool, developing good habits which are going to set you up for success in life, not things which are going to cost you money, cost you possibly your health, and take away from, really, what it means, I think, to live in good, healthy, strong lifestyle.
All right, guys. That's it. I would love to hear from you guys down in the comments below. Let me know if you find any research. If you’ve got any stories, if you've got any examples or any thoughts on what anyone that's thinking to vape, what they should be doing.
So I look forward to reading the comments and responding and hear from you guys. I will see you all in the next video. Take care. Bye-bye.
