A reader reached out to me a little while ago.
He was going through Esquire & GQ…
and he saw the prices of pieces in there.
He asked, “Is it ever worth spending $1,000 on men's wardrobe pieces?”
It's a good question.
Especially if you're trying to build a wardrobe on a budget.
Short answer?
Yes.
But, there's quite a bit that goes into that answer.
Today's article is going to go over the 5 items that I think you will get a good return on investment on (and why)…
even if you spend over $1,000.
1. A Perfect Fitting Suit
There’s no doubt that a suit says a lot about you. If it’s the right fit – you’ll be able to wear it in a way that shows you’re a man of power. It allows you to appear confident and in total control.
Many of us would be fine getting an average-priced suit and having a local tailor fix it up. But there are guys who benefit from $1,000 suits in certain industries.
They may be dealing with wealthy clients every day. Or they’re the ones tasked to close multi-million dollar deals. It’s crucial for them to look like a star.
There are two main categories which higher-end suits belong to:
Made-To-Measure
These suits are known as semi-customizable kinds. The fabric is already chosen while both the jacket and trousers have been pre-constructed. The catch is that their stitches are temporary.
The suit is meant to be fitted according to your frame and when all the measurements are finalized, it can be replaced with permanent stitching. So this system works to your advantage if you want to buy something that needs a few quick adjustments.
Bespoke
For those who are very particular about the fit – bespoke suits are the way to go. They’re fully customized based on your complete set of measurements from the neck to the ankle. The tailoring process is super meticulous.
The buyer has a say in everything from the fabric of his custom suit to all the minor details (such as the pocket type and color of the buttons). The fact that their construction is highly personalized… it makes these suits extraordinary.
2. Leather Luggage
Alan Flusser – who wrote Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion – says a proper briefcase makes a man in a suit project a commanding, finished look.
I completely agree. Leather briefcases and other kinds of leather bags can take a guy’s image from good to GREAT.
Leather bags matter. They’re trademarks of any professional who’s on a business trip or heading to the office. So whenever you buy one of these – you should want the best quality.
You should pick a bag that’s made of genuine leather and feels like a million bucks (even though it’s priced just a fraction of that).
However with $1,000 – you can also get the most durable locks, zippers, buckles and handles available. You’re paying for one of the most durable and attractive types of luggage.
So where do you find them? You can start with well-known brands that make leather bags in the US. Companies like Blue Claw and Saddleback offer products with a lot of character. They’re designed to age well and look timeless as long as you take good care of them.
Learn what makes a perfect bag so you can make a well-informed decision on buying leather luggage. This won’t just give your style a massive upgrade. It will solidify your reputation as a man with purpose.
3. A High Quality Coat
For the colder months, covering up is not just a matter of what’s functional. These are the times for guys to show an acute sense of fashion beyond the suit and tie.
True professionals and stylish men know the importance of a good overcoat. We all need to protect ourselves from snow and rainfall – but these guys see beyond that.
They know there’s a big difference between wearing a coat and wearing a windbreaker or winter jacket. A coat elicits far more respect.
If you can afford it – a $1,000 coat serves as a strong symbol of status. It should be custom-made to fit you precisely. It’s supposed to feel warm but not drapey.
People are going to see you wear it on the street and be impressed. It speaks volumes about your success.
But remember this: always stick to classic coat designs and colors. Whether it’s a thousand or a few hundred dollars, you want an item to use for many years. It’s better to avoid trendy overcoats because once they go out of style – you’ll have to buy another one. Those coats aren’t meant to stay relevant in the long run.
4. A Luxury Watch
We know the importance of first impressions. And often times a man has to look his sharpest for job interviews or client meetings. He may also want to get a leg up when networking or attending events. That’s why a sleek watch comes in handy.
Just like a delicious cake needs icing, every guy needs a nice timepiece to match his wardrobe. It’s meant to complement your business/formal wear and enhance your presence.
So if you wear a $1,000 watch to your next corporate event… imagine how much more you’ll stand out. Even your boss might be amazed.
You’ll notice the most popular dress watches around share one common trait: simplicity.
They’re purposed for fashion over function – which is why many of them don’t include a second hand. They’re not about telling time accurately. They minimize details for maximum elegance.

5. Whatever You Think Works For You
The last item depends on you… it’s your choice, your interpretation. I can’t speak for you and what benefits your personal style. Only you can answer that.
But I can name a couple of suggestions:
- Custom dress shoes from reputable brands
- Jewelry such as rings, necklaces, cufflinks
- Fragrances
In the end… you choose whatever you find useful. The key is that you have to JUSTIFY paying $1,000 for it. What do you gain from spending that much for that particular version of that item?
More work opportunities?
Respect from your colleagues?
Becoming a ladies’ magnet?
Greater self-confidence?
