What does it take to be attractive?
- A charming personality
- A stylish wardrobe
- Good health
That last point – let's break it down some more:
- A great body (bonus for a six-pack & big arms)
- No pimples or acne
- Clean-shaven or well-kept facial hair
- Straight white teeth
- Nice hair
Check that last point – have you got it covered? Because “nice hair” doesn't just mean a kickass hairstyle…
Haircare is another factor. It's essential to a man's overall health & his appearance.
That involves hair products. Choose wisely and they'll enhance your hairstyle, give you more confidence & make you popular with the ladies.

Haircare Products: Benefit #1 – Keeping Your Hair Healthy
There's an old saying “health is wealth.” It applies just as much to your hair as it does to the rest of your body.
If you come to work or meet people every day with your hair looking frizzy and brittle, it sort of reflects poor health. Or even worse – a notion that you don't take care of yourself (or don't bother to shower)!
So that's why you must understand the purpose of a good shampoo and conditioner.
Shampoo
Health is the first and foremost purpose of shampoo. It takes care of the general cleanup – eliminating excess oil, dirt or product residue that may cause problems with your scalp later on.
But how often should you use shampoo? The truth is it's a different case for each person. Leonora Doclis (a trichologist at London's Belgravia Centre) suggests the following frequencies:
- Daily – recommended for those with a flaky scalp, so as to remove dead skin cells that may “cause problems with the production of natural scalp oils”
- Every 2-3 days – recommended for a relatively healthy scalp “with hair that gets oily”
- Twice a week or less – recommended for dry, high porous hair since it is “capable of soaking up large amounts of water which weighs down each strand, resulting in loss of elasticity and leading to breakage”
Remember that your hair produces a natural oil – sebum – which is actually beneficial. It works as a moisturizing barrier for both the scalp and hair. If you shampoo more frequently than what's ideal, your hair will start lacking serum all the time – losing its healthy moisture.
Conditioner
It's common knowledge that using conditioner comes after shampooing. But what many guys don't know is how conditioner really works. For starters – your hair is made up of three layers: the cuticle (outer layer), cortex (second layer), and medulla (inner layer).
When the cuticle of one strand is frayed, it can get caught on other neighboring strands that have lifted and jagged cuticles. This causes tangling and matting. Conditioner has the fats and oils to combat these imperfections and leave a smooth, waxy coating on your hair.
This coating is what allows the hair to stay soft, look and feel healthy. There's enough moisture that's sealed to help reduce static electricity (one of the main causes of frizzy hair).
Haircare Products: Benefit #2 – Giving Your Hair More Volume
Keep in mind that hair volume isn't about quantity. It has everything to do with the structure of each strand – both individually and collectively.
More volume means that the roots stand tall and aren't just flopping down. Without volume, the roots will go flat and prevent your hair from looking “abundant” and “thick” – which most people find more attractive than thinner-looking hair.
That's why you'll want to invest on a quality mousse or texture powder.
Mousse
Also known as the universal hair product, mousse is generally suitable for all hair types. This product has two main functions:
- Maximizing hair volume (you apply mousse at the roots and then blow dry from the root pulling upward)
- Enhancing texture & definition (as in amping up your existing hair type – waves become wavier, curls become curlier, straight hair becomes thicker and fuller, etc.)
Texture Powder
Like all other powder types – this one contains a base of silica silylate (which makes it a rough, coarse substance). It sticks to the hair fibers and adds volume by increasing friction between the fibers. Certain chemicals also absorb the excess oil from your hair – giving it an extra boost in volume.
Take note: textured powder is mostly used mostly as a pre-styler when grooming your hair (best followed by applying pomade or paste).

Haircare Products: Benefit #3 – Maintaining The Form & Style Of Your Hair
Always remember that hair frames your face. If you want your facial features and bone structure to stand out the best way possible, it's important to get the perfect hairstyle and know how to maintain it.
Most guys who have styled their own hair before would've used hair gel at some point in time. Many would realize it's not the best choice and switch products – and for a good reason.
Using gel comes with a number of risks like the accumulation of residue, dandruff, excessive drying (due to the alcohols found in the gel), frizzing and itchiness.
So take a page from their book and avoid hair gels altogether. Use any of the alternatives below.
Wax
Hair wax does a great job for both bedhead/messy looks and moderately structured styles. It's effective in creating spikes or holding the hair down neatly (like a side part). Guys with straight or slightly wavy hair will be fine using it. The only limitation is it tends to clump in curly hair.
Paste
Hair paste is one of the most versatile men’s hair products – it practically works for any style of hair. And because it's normally water-based, washing it out is easy. Once it's evenly distributed and your hair is styled accordingly, the product begins to cool and re-thicken – providing a nice hold.
Mousse
- Minimizing frizz – mousse removes most of the frizz in your hair (which sharpens your hairstyle even more) without the same kind of stickiness that hairspray causes
- Providing a weightless hold – mousse maintains how your hair strands are positioned without weighing them down the way hairspray does
- Sealing in your curls – mousse makes it easier for curly-haired men to avoid curls that go out of place during the day
Pomade
- Flexible – pomade gives your hair the ability to be recombed/reshaped throughout the day
- Versatile – pomade can be used for most hairstyles (and it's particularly great for quiffs, pompadours, and slicked back hair)
- Water-resistant (specifically wax/petroleum-based pomades) – this will be an advantage during rainy seasons
Take note: there are water-soluble pomades available as well. They provide a similar hold but can be washed out with water. However, such pomades don’t yield the same glossiness as their wax/petroleum cousins. They also tend to harden and make the hair stiffer.
Haircare Products: Benefit #4 – Adding More Shine To Your Hair
Isn't there something quite appealing about shiny things? It's true when we look at shampoo commercials – where a pretty girl turns her head and shows off her glistening straight hair. That's the kind of “finish touch” you want your hair to have before leaving the house.
Although it may not get the exact level of shine as those ads portray (they have Photoshop and other digital tools to enhance it) – you're still going to like how your hair reflects light well, helping you stick out even more.
So you need the help of the following products:
Cream
Hair cream gives out a nice balance between shine, hair separation, and substance. It's especially handy for men with fine or thinning hair who prefer not to have the weight of a wax/pomade. It also offers a super light and soft hold, making it a great pre-styling product.
Hair Serum
This product is also known as polish, gloss or smoothing fluid. It consistently provides a high level of shine thanks to the interplay between various oils and silicone. It also reduces frizz and imparts more silkiness to your hair.
Haircare Products: Benefit #5 – Making Your Hair Smell Nicer
Another attractive quality of some hair products (especially shampoos) is the fragrances they add. Certain shampoos have a mentholated smell that's similar to what you find in peppermints. Besides being excellent scalp cleansers, they're pretty much cologne for the hair.
Now if you're wondering if it's necessary to use shampoo with a nice fragrance – consider what Nexxus New York Salon Care's creative director Kevin Mancuso says about hair:
“Hair (especially oily hair) absorbs the smell of food, drink, and smog, but people become desensitized to their own hair’s odor.”
Mancuso also suggests that it's best to shampoo as often as you exercise because of the oil that's secreted in your scalp, which can smell not-so-good to other people. It's trickier if you're active every day – you'll need to make sure you're not using a dry shampoo (since the substance can build up and clog your scalp). But as long you follow up with the right conditioner, your hair won't have to suffer from dryness.
